Heads Up

Today sees the premiere of Battlestar Galactica: The Resistance, a ten part webseries that bridges the gap between the second season finale and the upcoming third season premiere. New episodes will go up on the official Sci-Fi site every tuesday and thursday, but here's a torrent for the first ep if, like myself, you keep getting shitty quality off Sci-Fi's streaming video app.

Thanks for the heads up; I'd never even heard of these 'til today.

Having watched it I'm interested in seeing more. Though too brief to accomplish much, it's well-produced enough to feel like an excerpt from the TV show. After the extremely rushed second half of the season finale, I'm definitely in need of something to consolidate the idea of the Cylon occupation and remove the sour taste from my mouth.

I'm a little more sanguine and a little less invested, actually. Nothing happened that we hadn't assumed would happen all the way back in March. With a cumulative airtime of only 30 minutes, it seems strange to be wasting a full 10% on stating the obvious, not to mention doing so at such a slack pace.

My thoughts:

-- I'm not convinced this format will play to BSG's strengths. Three-minute segments need to be snappy; BSG, I think, does better with slow-boil situations.

-- So I think this wasn't tailored as well as it could have been to the format, but it set the scene well enough. I don't think the producers can assume that everyone has thought about what was going to happen in the detail we did. :)

-- Do we think the new characters are going to be in S3, or are limited to this run?

Maybe not, but the second season ended with the establishment of a resistance, and feeling out a potential member is a cliché of the sub-genre. Not that BSG has been known to shy away from clichés (a fact that its reviewers tend to ignore because the clichés the show revels in usually aren't SFnal), which, by the way, makes me very nervous about the whole resistance storyline.

Oh, please. The reluctant resistance fighter with a sweetheart who wants to start a family? You can clock Duck's remaining lifespan with an egg timer.

The 2023 Hugo Awards: Now With an Asterisk

It's been a while since we've had one of these dramas. On Saturday, the nominating stats for the 2023 Hugo awards, which were announced in Chengdu, China in October 2023, were released to the public . There was a great deal of anticipation for these numbers, in no small part because of their much-delayed release. Though the WSFS constitution permits Hugo administrators to wait as long as 90 days before releasing the voting and nominating stats, most Hugo teams have them ready to go within minutes of the ceremony's conclusion. Chengdu, in contrast, waited the full allotted period, and even went a little bit over (the voting stats were released separately in December). Once the stats were released, it quickly became clear why the Chengdu Hugo team were hesitant to make them public. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

The first thing that must be said about this movie is that it should not work. It's a prequel to one of the most mind-blowing, groundbreaking, and just plain revolutionary action movies of the 21st century—and prequels are a bad idea in most cases, but all the more so when the character they revolve around has already given you their entire backstory in their original introduction, which is also the final, culminating act of their character arc. (To put it another way, if you had asked me, nine years ago, which character I thought offered more fertile ground for prequel storytelling, Imperator Furiosa or Han Solo, I would have picked Han without a moment's hesitation, and I don't even like Han that much.)
