I Promise Not to Make a Habit of This

But look! A puppy!


Her name is Luna. She's a mixed Pointer, about two months old. In the 30-something hours she's been in the house she's managed to steal two shoes and do something adorable about once every three seconds. She's also figured out what the kitchen is for, and has perfected her dinner-table mournful stare (sadly, to no effect). Adoptive big sister Belle is dubious about the entire exercise, but recognizes that the foolishness of humans is something to be tolerated. If the fish have an opinion they have, thus far, kept it to themselves.

Working on the principle that fish only have a seven second memory, their opinion is probably along the lines of:

"Oh look! A puppy! (bubble bubble) Oh look! A puppy! (bubble swim) Oh look! A puppy! (swim swim) Oh look! A puppy! (swim bubble) Oh look! A puppy! (bubble swim bubble) etc Hey Look! Galactica! (bubble bubble bubble) Hey Look! A puppy!) "

She hasn't had the park-full-of-dogs experience yet - it's not recommended to let puppies out in areas frequented by many dogs before they've had all their shots - but she and our neighbor's puppy (a four-month-old French Bulldog) have developed quite the rapport.

Sadly, by the time she can be taken to the park it'll be fall and there won't be the kind of crowd you get in the summer.

I and my German Shorthair Pointer are trying to figure out why on earth you would promise not to make a habit of posting pictures of that picture-perfect puppy.

(We are also trying to figure out how best to kidnap her. Better keep a watchful eye out.)

The 2023 Hugo Awards: Now With an Asterisk

It's been a while since we've had one of these dramas. On Saturday, the nominating stats for the 2023 Hugo awards, which were announced in Chengdu, China in October 2023, were released to the public . There was a great deal of anticipation for these numbers, in no small part because of their much-delayed release. Though the WSFS constitution permits Hugo administrators to wait as long as 90 days before releasing the voting and nominating stats, most Hugo teams have them ready to go within minutes of the ceremony's conclusion. Chengdu, in contrast, waited the full allotted period, and even went a little bit over (the voting stats were released separately in December). Once the stats were released, it quickly became clear why the Chengdu Hugo team were hesitant to make them public. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

The first thing that must be said about this movie is that it should not work. It's a prequel to one of the most mind-blowing, groundbreaking, and just plain revolutionary action movies of the 21st century—and prequels are a bad idea in most cases, but all the more so when the character they revolve around has already given you their entire backstory in their original introduction, which is also the final, culminating act of their character arc. (To put it another way, if you had asked me, nine years ago, which character I thought offered more fertile ground for prequel storytelling, Imperator Furiosa or Han Solo, I would have picked Han without a moment's hesitation, and I don't even like Han that much.)
